Alton is on the most southern tip of Lake Winnipesaukee and has many lakefront homes scattered along it's shoreline. Alton's original name was "New Durham Gore" because of rocky areas. In 1872 the Boston and Maine Railroad launched the steamer Mount Washington which was the first side wheeler and largest vessel on Lake Winnipesaukee. The train station is all that remains of the B&M railroad and is used as a community center. Most of Route 11 runs along the former B&M Railroad.
Alton abuts Wolfeboro to the northeast Gilford to the north west.
